Client: Bury Grammar School
Project: Proposed 6th Form Development
Overview

In 2010 Bury Grammar School invited proposals from NK Consultants to establish a new building extension to provide new sixth form accommodation comprising social area, dining area and lecture theatre.

The aim of the scheme was to create extended and improved facilities for sixth form use. Part of the development was to demolish inappropriate buildings and generate unification of the existing and proposed building designs whilst maintaining harmony with the surrounding landscape, vehicular and pedestrian areas.

The current street and access levels to the building were to be improved in order to allow access for all users by removing obstructions and creating level access.
The Project

The floor layouts have been developed to ensure that circulation spaces will provide for easy and unhindered movement throughout the building and provide generous space in which pupils can interact in a relaxed environment. Overall, a sense of light, air and space were provided to each area. The main entrance area, which is used by pupils, staff and visitors will have a stimulating visual impact incorporating a modern spacious reception area, which will embody and convey the school identity and the aim and purpose of the building.

The rear entrance gives suitable access from the car park for all allowing the main reception to be approached from either the front or the rear of the building. Access to the main existing school building is available at pavement level giving an all-inclusive approach between the new proposed building and the existing school building.
